Guild Partners with Music Wood Campaign to Protect Forests, Instrument Woods

Guild Guitars is very proud to announce its participation in the Greenpeace Music Wood Campaign, an initiative in which the environmental organization is partnering with musical instrument manufacturers to protect threatened forest habitats and safeguard the future of trees used to make instruments.

The program aims to increase the availability of traditional instrument woods that can be certified by Greenpeace’s Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and to demonstrate “one species at a time,” as the Music Wood website notes, “that there is a strong and growing market for well-managed FSC-certified wood.” The FSC promotes environmentally, socially and economically sound management of the world’s forests, and has certified 50 million hectares of forestland in more than 60 nations over the past ten years.

Greenpeace acknowledges that musical instrument manufacturing is not a “driving force behind the loss of critical forest habitat,” but considers the industry a leader in protecting and sustaining threatened forests and valuable timber species worldwide.

In North America—Alaska in particular, where there are no FSC-certified forests—the program’s goal is to spur demand for FSC-certified wood as the only acceptable musical instrument wood from the North American coastal temperate rainforest.
